THE MCF LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Dan and Karen DuVal Trustees of the McLean Community Foundation serve staggered terms of three years and no Trustee shall serve more than two consecutive three-year terms. The Board of Trustees meets regularly, exceeding its by-law requirement of quarterly meetings.
Richard C. "Rip" Sullivan, Jr. Rip has lived in McLean for nearly 35 years. A graduate of Langley High School (1977), he holds a B.A. from Amherst College and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is a partner with Reed Smith LLP, where he has been a commercial litigator for over 20 years. Rip is a member of the Virginia State Bar Council and the Board of Governors of the Virginia Bar Association. He has served in a variety of bar-related positions during his career, including Chairman of the VSB/VBA Joint Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, the VSB Special Committee on Resolution of Fee Disputes, the VSB Task Force on Emergency Legal Services, and as a member of the VSB Access to Justice Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Fairfax Law Foundation, has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Alexandria Bar Foundation, and is a member of the Virginia Bar Association, the Fairfax Bar Association, and the Federal Bar Association. He is licensed to practice in Virginia and D.C., has been named by Virginia Business Magazine as a member of Virginia's Legal Elite, and has been named as both a Virginia and D.C. Super Lawyer. In addition to his bar-related activities, Rip has served on the Boards of Directors of Legal Services of Northern Virginia (President in 2002), the Potomac Legal Aid Society, and Homestretch, Inc. He was appointed by the Governor to the Virginia Civics Commission, and by the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors to the Fairfax Consumer Protection Commission. He is also a member of the Chairman's Advisory Board of the United States Institute of Peace. Rip lives in McLean with his wife Beth, and their four children Corey, Ryan, Jack and Joe.
Kathleen Murphy is a long time Washington, DC consultant whose unique experience has enabled her to build strong ties to Congress and within US Agencies and Departments. As President of Johnson Murphy and Associates LLC, Kathleen assists companies and organizations in devising legislative strategies, formulating bill and report language, strengthening and personalizing Congressional ties, as well as managing the interaction between Congress and Federal Agencies. Kathleen served in the Clinton Administration as a Senior Advisor for International Trade issues in the International Trade Administration at the Department of Commerce and served as a Congressional Liaison for The United States Agency for International Development. Before joining the Administration, Kathleen worked for Congressman Charlie Wilson (D-TX) on the House Appropriations Committee where she developed an expertise in Congressional Appropriations with a focus on Defense and Foreign Affairs. Kathleen writes speeches for the Director of the Women's Bureau at the Department of Labor. Additionally, she serves on the Human Services Council for Fairfax County VA. She also serves on various other boards including: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Women's Campaign International, PeacexPeace, and the Yale University Development Board. She is a co-founder of Salute Our Services, which serves to connect families of the deployed, and Kids Serve Too, an organization that honors the service of military dependent children. She also writes articles for the Times Newspapers in Fairfax, VA. The mother of four children, she graduated magna cum laude from The American University in Washington, DC.
Ms. Danner is a principal of her law firm in McLean, Virginia. Her practice is concentrated in full service business and trade association representation, and estate planning. Prior to establishing her own law firm in 1992, she was a partner with Ross & Hardies, a Chicago-based law firm, where she helped establish the firm's Washington, D.C. office. From 1982 through 1984, Ms. Danner was with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She was the Director of the Office of Manufactured Housing and Construction Standards, responsible for all construction standards relating to public, FHA-insured housing, and manufactured housing as well as the manufactured housing enforcement program. In 1982, she was appointed Director of the Office of Manufactured Housing and Regulatory Functions. In this position, she administered four major housing programs: Title I Insured Loans, Manufactured Housing, Minimum Property Standards and Technical Suitability of Products, and Land Sales Registration. Previously, Ms. Danner had served as an attorney with the Office of General Counsel of HUD. In private practice, Ms. Danner has represented a wide range of clients, including national and state trade associations concerning federal and state regulatory and land use issues. She has filed amicus briefs on behalf of her clients on critical national issues before the U.S. Supreme Court. She has participated in litigation in Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In 1977, Ms. Danner earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. As a law student, she was third year editor for the Georgetown International Law Journal, Law and Policy in International Business. She earned a M.A. from the American University School of International Service and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Purdue University. She attended Madrid University her junior year and is fluent in Spanish. Ms. Danner is a member of the Virginia, Indiana and District of Columbia Bars. She served four years on the District of Columbia's Building Code Advisory Committee engaged in updating the District's construction codes. She was appointed by HUD Secretary Kemp and served as a member of the National Manufactured Home Advisory Council. On June 22, 2004, Ms. Danner was installed as President of the Rotary Club of McLean, which is the world's oldest service club organization. Ms. Danner was a member of the Fairfax County Water Authority Board from 1992 until 2004 and she served as Chair of its Water Quality Committee and served on its Finance Committee. She is a member of the American Society of Association Executives Legal Section and has served on its Legal Council. She has served as the Chair of the Dranesville Area Plan Review Task Force and on the Dranesville Transportation Spot Improvement Task Force. Ms. Danner is an active member of many business and professional associations, including the McLean Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of McLean, and McLean, Fairfax and American Bar Associations. She served on the McLean Community Center Governing Board from 1986-92; as President of the Barney Neighborhood House Board of Trustees; and is currently serving on the Tyson's Land Use Task Force.
Gary L. Filerman, Ph.D. is Professor of Health Systems Administration at Georgetown University. His fields of interest include: leadership development for health services globally; the relationship between practice setting, CME and behavioral change; health workforce policy and the implications of international hospital standards. Dr. Filerman also serves as a consultant to Joint Commission International. Dr. Filerman has served as a consultant to foundations, international agencies, educational institutions and governments in 38 countries. He has worked with the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation on private participation in the health sector and health sector reform in Romania. He has published over 60 articles, books and monographs. He has served as president of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, executive secretary of the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Administration, associate director of the Pew Commission on the Future of the Health Professions, vice president for international development of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, senior health advisor at the Academy For Educational Development and interim chairman of the Department of Health Services Management and Policy at George Washington University. Dr. Filerman is past president of the David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship and serves on the boards of several community and national organizations. He is a recipient of the Humanitarian Award of the American Refugee Committee, the Silver Medal of Luven University, Distinguished Contribution Award of the Regents of the University of Minnesota as well as recognitions by the Ohio State University and the University of Chicago. He received his B.A., M.A., M.H.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
Demetra K. Matthews is a self-employed Certified Public Accountant, providing a full range of accounting, tax and business consulting services to individuals and a variety of industries and sizes of companies. Prior to being self-employed, Demetra had nine years of auditing experience with an international accounting firm and nine years of tax experience with Washington based firms. She also spent seven years as a consultant to clients of an international accounting firm in the role of a controller. In addition to serving as a MCF trustee, Demetra has been an active member of the McLean Chamber of Commerce for over twelve years, where she has served as treasurer, secretary, on the Board of Directors, on the Executive Committee, Finance Committee chair, Golf Tournament chair, provided office support, and served on the Community Awards Banquet, McLean Day and Gala committees. Demetra is a graduate of Rider University in New Jersey. She is an active member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Northern Virginia Chapter of CPA's, where she is on the Board of Directors. Previous involvements include President of Langley High School PTSA, editor of the Greater McLean Republican Women's newsletter, adult leader for Boy Scout Troop 1916 and Young Life, and served as treasurer of her church for ten years and treasurer of her homeowners association for six years. Demetra and her husband, Dale, reside in McLean. They have two children, Karen and Louis, and a son-in-law, Robert.
Trish Butler is a 20-year veteran of senior public affairs positions for federal and state government, trade associations and the private sector. As the owner of Sage Communications and Public Affairs, LLC of McLean, Virginia, which she founded in 1993, she is the creative force behind award-winning public service campaigns for the federal government and private trade groups and has served as government affairs consultant to numerous non- profit organizations. From 1989 to 1993, Trish Butler served the George H.W. Bush Administration as Associate Commissioner of Public Affairs for the Social Security Administration. Prior to her appointment at SSA, Butler's career included senior positions with several trade associations and served as special assistant to two U.S. Secretaries of Labor during the Ford Administration. She was Deputy Director of Pennsylvania's Washington, D.C. lobbying office during Dick Thornburgh's tenure as Governor. In addition to her position as a Trustee and President of the McLean Community Foundation, she serves on the Board of Directors of Consumer Action, a national grassroots advocacy organization. She and her husband, Scott Stapf, senior partner of The Hastings Group, reside in McLean with their three Labrador retrievers, Sundance, Bogie and Indy.
